Brief Profile
Captain Vikram Batra was born in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. After
completing his education at DAV College, Chandigarh, he joined the Indian Military
Academy in 1996 and was commissioned into the 13th Battalion of Jammu and
Kashmir Rifles in 1997.
During the 1999 Kargil War, Captain Batra displayed extraordinary courage and
leadership in two key operations. First, he successfully led his company to recapture Point 5140
on June 20, 1999, at an altitude of 17,000 feet. When asked about the success of this mission,
he famously replied with his now-iconic phrase: "Yeh Dil Maange More!" (This heart desires more).
In his final battle on July 7, 1999, Captain Batra volunteered to lead a daring rescue mission to save
an injured officer at Point 4875. After successfully rescuing the officer and clearing enemy positions, he was fatally
wounded while shielding his men from enemy fire. His last words were: "Jai Mata Di" (Victory to Mother Goddess).
For his exceptional bravery, unwavering commitment, and supreme sacrifice, Captain Vikram Batra was posthumously awarded the
Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration. His courage and charismatic leadership continue
to inspire generations of Indians and embody the spirit of the Indian Armed Forces.
"Either I will come back after hoisting the tricolor in victory or return wrapped in it, but I will come back for sure." - Captain Vikram Batra
